Obituary of Helen Burtman

Helen Marilyn Burtman (nee: Schnur), a longtime resident of White Plains, N.Y., and prior to that Scarsdale, N.Y. passed away on March 28, 2022 at age 89. She was the devoted daughter of Ray and Sigmund Schnur who raised her in Brooklyn, N.Y. where she attended Midwood High School and Brooklyn College. She married Norman Burtman in 1953 and after living in Rockville Center and Plainview, N.Y. moved to Scarsdale in 1962 where together they happily raised their three children: Andrea, Joel, and Ruth. Norman passed away in 1981 when Helen was only 47 years old. She then moved to White Plains where she relished her bright, airy, art-filled living space every single day. Helen met Leslie Friedman in 1988 and theyspent over thirty joyful years cruising the high seas, wintering in Scottsdale, Arizona, going out to dinner with friends, and enjoying the time she spent with her children, grandchildren,and great grandchildren.

Helen was a talented sculptor and jeweler designer, avid reader and world traveler. She considered herself a very fortunatemother, grandmother, and great grandmother, since she was ableto attend many small and large family gatherings, graduations,weddings, and Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. Helen was a caring mother to her children Andrea Selonick (James), Joel Burtman(Claudia), Ruth Burtman (the late Candace vanStryker); a proud grandmother of Sam Selonick (Shara), Rachel Selonick (Seth Lowinger), Anna Selonick; Brianna Burtman (John Grossman), Lexi Burtman (Chris Diskin); Nathan Burtman; and thrilled great grandmother of Max and Zoey Grossman, Emily Selonick, and Miles Diskin.

Her private funeral service took place on March 30, 2022. In lieu of flowers we kindly ask that donations be made in her memory to Voices of Children (voices.org.ua) for children surviving trauma in Ukraine or The Dementia Society of America (dementiasociety.org).
