Obituary of Violet M. Sundin

Violet was born on May 6, 1935, proudly raised in East New York, Brooklyn. She was the youngest and last living member of her large family, which included her parents Mildred and Giacomo Salerno, and siblings Pete, Virginia, Katherine, Gloria, Jill, and Bart.

In her early 20s, Vi was part of social groups that spent summer weekends in share houses on Fire Island, winter weekends at “The Ski Club” in Vermont, and many evenings at Regents Row in Queens. These experiences created life-long friendships and legendary memories of laughter, antics and fun. This was also where Vi met her husband Roy Sundin, to whom she was married for 28 years, prior to his passing in 1994.

Vi and Roy moved to Larchmont in 1966, first to an apartment on Cabot Road, then to West Garden Road, where they lived and raised their boys Glen and Eric. Vi was a devoted mother and neighbor. She was active in her parish Sts John and Paul, serving as a Eucharistic Minister, and participating in many social activities. Once her boys were in school, she began a career outside the home, first as an aide at Murray Avenue School, eventually working full time as a Director of the United Way of Larchmont for 25 years. Through this post working in the heart of town, Vi also made many wonderful friendships and connections in the community.

Once retired at 70, Vi was able to further pursue her favorite hobbies, which included tending to her beautiful garden, working on her intricate and amazing doll house, knitting and reading. Most of all, Vi loved being Grandma. She was happiest when she was spending time with her grandchildren at her home. She always had a special snack at the ready, and a “job” for them to work on together.

Vi was as strong willed and determined as they come, which served her well throughout the various health challenges she faced in her 80s. A true testament to her fierce resolve, she lived independently until the final month of her life and passed peacefully at home surrounded by all she held dear.

She is survived by her sons, Glen (Betsy) and Eric (Martha) and her grandchildren Mackenzie, Callie, Patrick, Connor, Olivia and Ellie.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Vi by making a donation to The United Way of Westchester/Putnam counties https://www.uwwp.org/
