Obituary of Brian Grinnell

Brian was born in New Rochelle, NY to Katherine Carr Grinnell and Richard Doane Grinnell. He was the seventh of nine children. The family moved to Larchmont in 1959, where Brian spent his formative years. He attended St. Augustine’s Grammar School and later Mamaroneck High School where he was a star on the Varsity Soccer team.

Following high school, Brian headed West in pursuit of adventure and work. He resided in many places throughout his life, including Northern California; Vancouver British Columbia; Montauk New York; Lubeck Maine; Camden Maine; and Harpswell Maine.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Cindy Davis (Harpswell, ME), his cherished children Willow and Tucker (Camden, ME), and his 8 siblings; Doane (Vancouver, BC), Anne (Stratford, CT), Christopher (New Rochelle, NY), Michael (Tiburon, CA), Gregory (Bridgton, ME), Peter (Larchmont, NY), Robert (New Lexington, OH), and William (Marblehead, MA).

Brian’s adventurous disposition led him across North America working in various industries such as an Oil Field Wildcatter in Canada, Commercial Fisherman in Montauk and Tug Boat Operator in Maine. He was an accomplished Mariner and had a deep love for the sea. When relaxing in Maine, one could find him at the helm of his sailboat “Andiamo”, camping on the small glacial islands near Harpswell or surfing year-round with his children, if the swell permitted.

He was caring, gentle, considerate, loyal, loving and always interested in listening. He loved his children, wife, family, friends and his dogs. Everyone who spent time with Brian felt like they had a special bond with him. And they did. Those who had the pleasure of knowing Brian will always remember his kind smile, his gentle laughter and his compassion. We will remember him for what he loved, especially, Surfing, Sailing, Camping, Hiking, Skiing, Snow Boarding, Fishing, Birding, Maple Syruping and Hawaiian Shirts!

Brian had tremendous love and support from Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews all who shared in his journey and helped walk him home.

We wish Fair Winds and Following Seas as Off To Sea crosses the the bar onto his next adventure.

Brian's family will receive friends on April 16th 4:00 - 8:00 PM at the John J. Fox Funeral Home, Inc. 2080 Boston Post Road Larchmont, NY 10538.

A wake service will start at 7:00 PM that evening to celebrate Brian's life with tributes and eulogies.
