Dear Maggie:
I am very sad that I am unable to attend your mother's service tomorrow. I am certain that it will be a loving and fitting tribute to her. I would like to accept your invitation to share some of my memories of your mom.
Aunt Therese embodied grace and gentility first revealed to me on the tennis court. There was no question that she shared the Bauer athletic prowess and competitiveness, she also shared the three time Lady Bing Trophy award winning style of her brother Bobby. Aunt Therese never lost her cool on the court. She returned balls to the service side only after she established that the receiver was aware the balls were on their way, she never hit a volley directly at her opponent even if it meant a sure point and she never yipped and hollered when she an her partner won break point. She was so patient and kind with novice players. Dave and I learned much from her about tenns etiquette and good sports(wo)manship.
Aunt Therese carried these qualites of grace and gentiliy through in her care for the environment. She was so ahead of her time in her conscientious approach to minimizing her carbon footprint. Reduce, reuse and recycle were part of her vocabulary long before blue boxes graced the boulevards of Bayfield. Once Aunt Therese arrived in Bayfield after the long drive from Larchmont that was the last time she would be seen in a motorized vehicle. Aunt Therese would be seen around town walking, swimming or riding a bike with a basket to get groceries, go to the flea market, visit friends and family and to get to the tennis court across highway #21. Aunt Theresa may have been responsible for coining the latest expression, "sitting is the new smoking". I wlll always remember Aunt Therese as a woman in motion.
Bayfield is a very special place for me as I know it is for you.Aunt Therese is one of the people who has made it so. I will miss her, yet feel her presence when I have the privilege to visit there next.
Please give a warm embrace to your dad, your siblings and Joe and Rebecca. Thinking of you with love.
Lori

When I think of Therese, I think of a strong and sweet woman, gentle and so very strong, clever and kind. These adjectives may not seem to all go together, but what I admired always about Therese is that these adjectives so easily co-existed inside of her. Even better, seeing her carry off this juggling act, this new definition of what it is to be a woman, made it possible for me to try to emulate and accept those differing characteristics in myself. Therese was another role model for me on how to be a woman who is an athlete and a loving mother, a tough go getter who takes no nonsense and a caring and giving person. I always loved talking to Therese, as she leaned in (partly because she could not hear well), showing her intense interest in every word I spoke. I know if I am going to miss her, I cannot imagine how much her family will miss her. I am so happy she was with her family at the end, and you will all be with her forever, just as she will be with all of you and us. May she rest in peace.
